At some point, women over 40 are apparently supposed to start dressing like they have no opinions.
Quiet colours.
Sensible tops.
Nothing too bold.
Nothing too funny.
Nothing that might suggest we still have a personality, a sense of humour or a working relationship with sarcasm.
Absolutely not.
I don't know who decided that midlife meant quietly disappearing into beige, but I would like a word.
Preferably while wearing a t-shirt that says Not Today.
The imaginary rulebook for women over 40
There seems to be this invisible rulebook that appears somewhere around your 40th birthday.
Nobody hands it to you directly.
It just sort of floats around in the background, making suggestions.
Maybe that is too young for you.
Maybe that is too bold.
Maybe that is not very flattering.
Maybe you should choose something more classic.
Maybe you should dress your age.
Dress your age.
What does that even mean?
Because my age currently involves bad sleep, too much responsibility, a questionable relationship with caffeine and the ability to know exactly where everyone else’s belongings are while having no idea where I put my own phone.
If I am dressing my age, frankly, a slogan t-shirt feels extremely appropriate.
When did clothes get so serious?
I like clothes.
I really do.
But I do not want every outfit to feel like a performance review.
Sometimes I just want to get dressed, feel comfortable, look vaguely pulled together and not spend the whole day thinking about what I am wearing.
And sometimes I want my outfit to say what I am already thinking.
That does not mean I want to look like I am trying to be twenty-two.
It does not mean I want neon slogans, cropped tops or anything that makes me feel like I have accidentally raided my daughters' wardrobes.
It just means I still want clothes with a bit of life in them.
A bit of humour.
A bit of “yes, that is exactly how I feel today”.
No, slogan t-shirts are not just for younger women
Let’s get that out of the way.
Slogan t-shirts are not just for younger women.
Bad slogan t-shirts can look wrong on anyone.
Good slogan t-shirts work at any age.
The difference is the design, the fit and whether the slogan actually feels like something you would say.
There is a big difference between a t-shirt that makes you feel like a walking novelty item and one that makes you think:
Yes. That. Exactly that.
That is the sweet spot.
The best slogans feel like your internal monologue
A slogan t-shirt works when the words feel true.
Not forced.
Not trying too hard.
Not something that makes your family say, “Are you actually going to wear that?”
Although, to be honest, sometimes that is a sign you are on the right track.
The best slogans feel like your internal monologue got tired of being subtle.
Not Today works because some days simply do not deserve access to your patience.
Not In The Mood works because sometimes your face has already submitted the paperwork.
I Said What I Said works because by midlife, many of us are no longer taking questions on perfectly reasonable boundaries.
That is not childish.
That is efficient.
The jeans and t-shirt outfit still works
There is nothing wrong with jeans and a t-shirt.
Honestly, it is one of the most useful outfit formulas ever invented.
Jeans.
T-shirt.
Trainers.
Done.
The trick is making it feel like a choice, not something you grabbed while muttering at the laundry pile.
A good slogan t-shirt does that.
It takes a very basic outfit and gives it a point.
Suddenly you are not just wearing jeans and a tee.
You are wearing a mood.
And frankly, some days the mood deserves representation.
The blazer trick
If you want a slogan t-shirt to feel a bit more grown-up, put a blazer over it.
That is the whole trick.
No complicated fashion maths required.
A blazer says, “I am put together.”
The t-shirt says, “But please do not mistake that for availability.”
It works beautifully.
Black slogan tee, blazer, jeans, trainers.
Or white slogan tee, neutral jacket, wide-leg trousers.
Simple.
Comfortable.
Still very much not in the mood for nonsense.
The cardigan version
If a blazer feels too structured, go cardigan.
A cardigan and slogan tee is a very real-life outfit.
Soft enough for home.
Presentable enough for errands.
Easy enough for school runs, dog walks, supermarket trips and pretending you are fine while mentally calculating how many jobs you can fit into one afternoon.
It is not glamorous.
It is useful.
And useful is underrated.
Especially when you are over 40 and your day contains three appointments, a food shop, a parcel return, a family WhatsApp situation and someone asking what is for tea.
The black t-shirt is doing serious work
A black slogan t-shirt is probably the easiest place to start.
It looks a bit sharper.
It works with jeans, leggings, wide-leg trousers, cardigans, jackets and trainers.
It is forgiving.
It is practical.
It has less “fresh white t-shirt that must be protected from coffee, dogs and real life” pressure.
And if the slogan is clean and simple, it can look more stylish than you might expect.
Black tee, black jeans, white trainers.
Easy.
Black tee, blue jeans, cardigan.
Still easy.
Black tee under a blazer.
Look at you, functioning.
The white t-shirt is braver than it looks
I love a white t-shirt in theory.
Fresh.
Clean.
Simple.
Very “I am a person who can drink coffee without incident”.
Which, personally, is not always my lived experience.
But a white slogan tee does look good.
Especially with denim, black trousers, neutral layers and trainers.
It feels casual and bright without being fussy.
The only thing to remember is that white t-shirts require a certain level of trust in yourself, your washing machine and everyone around you not to wipe anything on you.
Proceed with confidence.
Or at least with stain remover.
What makes a slogan t-shirt look grown-up?
For me, it is about keeping the rest simple.
The t-shirt is already saying something.
It does not need six accessories, patterned trousers, dramatic shoes and a hat with its own emotional backstory.
Unless that is your thing, in which case carry on.
But for everyday wear, simple usually works best.
Good jeans.
Easy trousers.
Trainers.
Cardigan.
Blazer.
Casual jacket.
A slogan that feels like you.
That is enough.
There is nothing wrong with wanting comfort
Somewhere along the way, comfort got treated like giving up.
I reject that.
Comfort is not giving up.
Comfort is information.
It says: I have a body. I live in it all day. I would like my clothes not to annoy me.
That is perfectly reasonable.
Especially in midlife, when your body may already be doing unexpected things without your permission.
Hot flushes.
Bloating.
Bad sleep.
Low patience.
Random aches.
The sudden inability to tolerate a waistband that was perfectly fine last week.
If a slogan t-shirt makes you feel comfortable and still like yourself, that is not giving up.
That is dressing intelligently.
Style over 40 does not have to be boring
I do not want to dress like I am trying to be younger.
I also do not want to dress like I have been placed in a cupboard labelled “sensible woman”.
There is space between those two things.
That space is where the good outfits are.
The ones that are comfortable but not dull.
Simple but not empty.
Easy but not apologetic.
The ones that still feel like there is a person inside them.
A tired person, possibly.
A person who needs coffee, definitely.
But a person with humour, opinions and no current plans to disappear quietly.
The joy of dressing like yourself
One of the best things about getting older is caring slightly less.
Not about everything.
Obviously we still care about plenty.
We care about our families, our homes, our work, our dogs, our friends, the washing, the bills, the appointments, the group chats and whether anyone has taken anything out for tea.
But hopefully, slowly, we start caring less about dressing for approval.
We start asking better questions.
Do I like this?
Is it comfortable?
Will I actually wear it?
Does it feel like me?
Does it make me smile?
Can I sit down in it without regret?
These are important questions.
Possibly more important than anything a fashion magazine has ever said.

Final thought
So, can you wear a slogan t-shirt over 40?
Yes.
Obviously.
You can wear the slogan tee.
You can wear the hoodie.
You can wear the thing that makes you laugh.
You can wear clothes that are comfortable, useful, funny and still feel like you.
You do not have to dress like you are trying to be younger.
You do not have to dress like you have given up either.
You can dress like a woman who knows herself, has limited patience for nonsense and would quite like her outfit to be on her side.
And honestly?
That sounds like a very good style era to me.
